Terms and Conditions

16 Ukes is a six-month educational ukulele program led by James Hill and operated by Crystal Lake Media Inc. ("we," "us," "our"), powered by the Uketropolis platform. These Terms & Conditions ("Terms") govern your participation in the program. By checking the box at checkout, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agree to be bound by these Terms.
Please read them carefully. If you do not agree, please do not enroll.
1. The program
16 Ukes provides each enrolled student with, per month:
- One private one-on-one lesson with James Hill conducted online
- One live small-group session (up to 8 participants) conducted online
- One live full-cohort session (all 16 participants) conducted online
- Access to a private online student portal for archived lesson videos, lesson notes, and scheduling
- A personalized six-month learning plan
Enrollment is limited to 16 students and is by application only. Acceptance is at our sole discretion.
2. Eligibility
You must be 18 years of age or older to enroll. A student under 18 may participate only with a parent or legal guardian who agrees to these Terms on the student's behalf and accepts responsibility for payment and conduct. Enrollment is personal to the accepted student. Your login and student portal are for your use only. You may not share your credentials, and you may not send another person to attend lessons in your place.
3. Minimum commitment
16 Ukes carries a six-month minimum commitment. Because enrollment is limited to 16 places and follows an application and vetting process, a spot that becomes vacant partway through a cohort cannot practically be refilled. For that reason:
- The standard Uketropolis 30-day money-back guarantee does not apply to 16 Ukes.
- No refunds are offered once the program has started, except in cases of force majeure, serious illness, or act of God (see Section 4).
- By enrolling, you accept the full six-month commitment.
4. Refunds, force majeure, and interruptions
No refunds are provided once the program has started, except where a student is genuinely unable to continue due to force majeure, serious illness, or act of God. Such cases are handled at our reasonable discretion and may take the form of a credit, a pause, or a pro-rated refund as appropriate.
If James or Crystal Lake Media Inc. is unable to deliver scheduled sessions due to circumstances beyond our control (illness, emergency, technical failure, or other force majeure), we will make reasonable efforts to reschedule affected sessions or otherwise make them up.
5. Payments
The program fee is $350 USD per month. Payment is processed automatically each month against the payment card on file. You explicitly authorize this recurring charge when you check the payment-authorization box at checkout; this section reinforces that authorization.
All fees are in US dollars. Your bank or card issuer may apply currency-conversion or foreign-transaction fees, which are your responsibility.
Declined or failed payments: If a scheduled payment fails, we may retry the charge and may pause your portal access and sessions until payment is resolved. A failed payment does not release you from the six-month minimum commitment.
6. Term, renewal, and cancellation
16 Ukes runs in two six-month cohorts per year: September to February and March to August.
Your commitment ends with your cohort. To continue into the next cohort, you confirm your place no later than 30 days before the end of the term and we resume billing. Otherwise, billing stops at the end of your term and a student from the 16 Ukes waiting list will fill your spot in the next 6-month term.

7. Student expectations
16 Ukes is a serious program for committed students. By enrolling, you agree that:
- You will practice between lessons. You should be able to devote at least 3 hours per week to your improvement. If you cannot, 16 Ukes is not the right program for you.
- You will participate in the small-group and full-cohort sessions as these sessions benefit every student in the program.
Students who do not show an appropriate level of commitment may be asked to reevaluate their participation at the start of the next cohort. Two cohorts run annually: September to February and March to August.
8. Scheduling and rescheduling
The program is powered by Uketropolis. By logging in to your 16 Ukes student portal, you can schedule and reschedule your lessons at any time, subject to the following:
- At least 24 hours' notice is required to change a lesson time.
- No-shows are not made up. A lesson you miss without proper notice will not be rescheduled or made up at a later date.
- Group-session dates and times are posted in the portal and announced by email.
- All lessons and group sessions are recorded and shared in the portal. Your private lesson videos are only accessible to you. Group session videos are accessible to all students in the cohort.
9. Changes to the schedule for touring
From time to time, changes to the monthly schedule may be necessary to accommodate James's touring schedule. When this happens, changes will be communicated to all students well in advance.
10. Code of conduct and zero-tolerance policy
We are committed to a supportive, respectful learning environment. We have zero tolerance for abuse. Verbal abuse or harassment directed at James or at any fellow student will not be tolerated. Suspension or removal from the program for such conduct is at James's sole discretion, and no refund will be owed where a student is removed for this reason.
You also agree to treat what is shared in group sessions with respect and discretion, and to help keep the cohort a safe space for everyone.
11. Recordings, privacy, and confidentiality
Your lessons and group sessions are recorded and made available to the relevant students through the portal. Group-session recordings may include other students. As such, you may not independently record, screen-capture, download for redistribution, or share program sessions or materials. Official recordings are provided in the portal.
We may use recordings, images, and clips of the program for our own promotional purposes. By enrolling, you consent to appear in such promotional material. If you have concerns about your likeness being used, contact us and we will work with you. Your personal information is handled in accordance with the Uketropolis Privacy Policy.
12. Intellectual property
All program content including archived lesson videos, lesson notes, arrangements, exercises, curriculum, and other materials is the property of Crystal Lake Media Inc. unless otherwise noted, and is protected by copyright.
You are granted a personal, non-transferable, non-exclusive licence to access and use this content for your own learning during and after the program. You may not copy, redistribute, sell, publicly post, or use the materials to teach others.
Sharing clips on social media: we love it when students are proud of their progress, but posting program content publicly is by request and written permission only. If you'd like to post a clip of your lesson or playing, just ask, and in most cases we'll be glad to say yes and help you with it. Footage that includes other students (such as group sessions) will not be approved for posting without those students' consent as well.
13. Technology requirements
Sessions are delivered online. You are responsible for having a reliable internet connection, a device with a working camera and microphone, and the ability to use our meeting and portal platforms (including Uketropolis.com and any video-conferencing tools we may use). We are not responsible for missed sessions caused by a student's own technical issues.
14. Third-party platforms
The program relies on third-party services and our video-conferencing provider (Kajabi). Your use of those services is also subject to their respective terms and privacy policies.
15. No guarantee of results
We are committed to giving you excellent instruction and support. However, musical progress depends on many factors, including your own practice and participation. We do not guarantee any specific result, skill level, or outcome.
16. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Crystal Lake Media Inc., James Hill, and our affiliates are not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your participation in 16 Ukes. Our total liability to you is limited to the amount you have paid to us for the program.
17. Changes to these Terms
We may change these Terms at any time. The current version is always posted on this page. Please check this page to stay up to date with the most current 16 Ukes Terms & Conditions. Your continued participation after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
18. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Nova Scotia and the laws of Canada applicable therein, without regard to conflict-of-law principles.
