Happy Birthday to Uke!

On August 23rd, 1879, the sailing ship Ravenscrag arrived in Honolulu, carrying over 400 Madeiran immigrants and their tiny guitars called machetes ("mah-shettes"). It was the first time such a sound had been heard in the Hawaiian Islands. Within a decade the ukulele was the official instrument of Hawai'i.

Uke Week was started in 2021 by Uketropolis founder James Hill as a celebration of ukulele music, community, history and culture. What began as an informal gathering of players and teachers has grown into a global, week-long event that highlights the instrument’s versatility, accessibility, and joyful spirit.
